H.A.N.D. (Helping Assist Nepal's Disabled)
The H.A.N.D. For Those Who Have No Hands
The Need

Physical disabilities needs in Nepal include: leprosy, amputees, blind, deaf, stroke, cerebral palsy and severe burns.

Assistance will include:

  • Provide education to individual’s with cerebral palsy or strokes on ways to improve mobility and health. Provide long-term medical assistance and education to leprosy-affected individuals needing ongoing medical care after the leprosy causing bacteria has been stopped.
  • Provide education and assistance for individuals in learning new skills to allow them to be gainfully employed.
  • Arrange for micro financing to assist individuals in creating a micro business in order to provide for their families within their home country of Nepal.

  • Coordinate short-term volunteer medical professionals in providing medical treatment to Nepalis with disabilities.

There are currently a number of organizations working in Nepal, but vast remote areas rarely receive attention from these organizations. The purpose of H.A.N.D is to focus on these remote regions.

In 2008 Brian Smith spent 3 months traveling the Solukhumbu region of Nepal researching disability needs in the remote areas.  Occupational therapist Yenchen Chang also traveled with Brian as they worked with cerebral palsy and stroke patients.
